Agatha of the East

1020 – 1070 · Generation VII · House of Wessex

Agatha of the East (1020–1070). Married Edward the Exile in 1043. One of their children is recorded in this archive. Her early years are a blank, and who her parents were is still one of medieval genealogy’s unsettled puzzles. English chroniclers called her a kinswoman of “Emperor Henry”; others made her the sister of a Hungarian queen, or a bride Edward found in Kievan Rus. Modern scholars have proposed a niece of Henry III, a daughter of Yaroslav the Wise of Kiev, and Bulgarian or Polish origins, without agreement; her rare Greek name and her descendants’ unusual names — Margaret, Cristina, David, Alexander — have been read as clues. She came to England with Edward and their children in 1057 and was widowed soon after. Her children were Edgar Ætheling, Saint Margaret of Scotland and Cristina. After the Norman Conquest she fled north with them in 1067 to the protection of Malcolm III, and she disappears from the record after 1070.
