Anne Mortimer
1388 – 1411 · Generation XVIII
Anne Mortimer (1388–1411). Married Richard of Conisburgh in 1408. One of their children is recorded in this archive. Carried the senior line of Edward III into the House of York. The eldest child of Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, and Eleanor Holland, she descended through her father from Lionel, Duke of Clarence, Edward III’s second surviving son. When Henry IV seized the throne in 1399, her brothers were taken into royal custody as potential rivals, while Anne and her sister remained with their mother; after their mother’s death in 1405 the girls were described as destitute. She wed Richard of Conisburgh, a younger son of Edmund, Duke of York, in a hurried, clandestine match that her nearest kin seem to have learned of only afterwards; a papal dispensation made it valid in May 1408. She bore a daughter, Isabel, and two sons, the younger of whom was the future Richard, Duke of York, but she died soon after his birth in September 1411. She was buried at Kings Langley, near her husband’s parents.
