Æthelstan of Wessex (894–939). First King of all England (r. 924–939). Victor of Brunanburh in 937; died unmarried, the crown passing to his half-brother. The Mercians accepted him at once on his father’s death, but Wessex resisted for months and he was not crowned until September 925. In 927 he took York, the last Viking kingdom, becoming the first Anglo-Saxon ruler of all England; in 934 he marched into Scotland and forced Constantine II to submit. He centralised government, kept a tighter grip on the drafting of charters, and drew Welsh kings to his councils in acknowledgment of his overlordship — no tenth-century English king left behind so large a body of legal texts. Deeply pious, a collector of relics and founder of churches, he made his household a centre of English learning, and by marrying several sisters to rulers abroad he involved himself in continental politics more deeply than any other West Saxon king.

894 — Born
924 — Athelstan becomes King of Wessex and Mercia on the death of his father Edward the Elder.
926 — Athelstan annexes Northumbria, and forces the kings of Wales, Strathclyde, the Picts, and the Scots to submit to him
926 — Athelstan marries his sister to Sihtric the Viking King of York to cement his ties with the North.
927 — Sihtric dies. Athelstan declares himself King of All England.
934 — Athelstan invades Scotland.
937 — Battle of Brunanburh: Athelstan defeats an alliance of Scots, Celts, Danes, and Vikings.
939 — Died
939 — Athelstan dies at Gloucester and is buried at Malmesbury.
