Margaret Holland
1385 – 1439 · Generation XVIII
Margaret Holland (1385–1439). Married John Beaufort in 1397. One of their children is recorded in this archive. Her father was Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent, whose mother Joan, “the Fair Maid of Kent,” was also the mother of Richard II. In 1399 she was made a Lady of the Garter. Of her six children by Beaufort, Joan married James I of Scotland, and John, later Duke of Somerset, carried her line to the Tudors. Widowed in 1410, she took as her second husband Henry IV’s son Thomas, Duke of Clarence, and in 1419 joined him in Normandy with her sons; he was killed at the Battle of Baugé in 1421. She spent her final years at St Saviour’s Abbey, Bermondsey. At Canterbury Cathedral she commissioned an alabaster tomb on which her effigy lies between those of both husbands — a rare arrangement, for which both men were moved from their graves in the Trinity Chapel to lie beside her.
