Matilda of Scotland

Matilda of Scotland (1080–1118). Queen consort. Married Henry I Beauclerc in 1100. 2 of their children are recorded in this archive. Christened Edith, she was a daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland and Margaret of Wessex, and was schooled at Romsey Abbey under her aunt Christina, who made her wear a veil, and later at Wilton. Henry valued her descent from the old Wessex kings, but first a council of bishops called by Archbishop Anselm had to establish that she had never taken vows. Crowned at her wedding, she took the Norman name Matilda. She acted as regent during Henry’s absences, helped mediate the settlement of 1105 between king and archbishop over the investiture of bishops, and kept a court full of poets. Her building works included the first arched bridge in England, at Stratford-le-Bow, and leper hospitals, among them the one that became St Giles-in-the-Fields. Remembered as “Good Queen Maud,” she was buried in Westminster Abbey.
