Alexios III Angelos

Alexios (AD 1153 – 1211). Emperor (r. 1195–1203). Married Euphrosyne. Father of Eudokia, Anna Komnene Angelina and Irene Angelina. He seized the crown from his younger brother Isaac II — blinded and imprisoned for good measure — and reigned as 'Alexios Komnenos' to trade on the prestige of the older dynasty. When the Fourth Crusade appeared off Constantinople in 1203 championing his nephew, the defence fell to him; he led out a great force on 17 July, lost his nerve without giving battle, and that night took a boat for Thrace with his daughter Irene and a thousand pounds of gold, abandoning his wife and other daughters. Exile became a career of intrigue: efforts to organize resistance at Adrianople and Mosynopolis came to nothing, he blinded his new son-in-law Alexios V, and he passed through the custody of Boniface of Montferrat before being ransomed to Asia Minor, where he schemed with the sultan of Rum against another son-in-law, Theodore Laskaris. Taken prisoner after the sultan's defeat in 1211, he died that year in a monastery at Nicaea.
