Constantine (AD 718 – 775). Emperor (r. 741–775). Iconoclast; son of Leo III and Maria. A capable commander, he turned civil war in the Muslim world to his advantage with offensives along the Arab frontier, and with the east quiet he campaigned again and again against the Bulgars in the Balkans. By settling Christians from the Arab borderlands in Thrace he tightened the empire's hold on its Balkan territories, and he left his mark on military and administrative reform besides. His fervent iconoclasm and hostility to monasticism cost him dearly with posterity: later Byzantine writers blackened his memory, fastening on him the nickname Kopronymos — “the Dung-Named” — from a tale that he had fouled his own baptism.
