Constantius I

Constantius (AD 250 – 306). Emperor (r. 305–306). Married Helena; the marriage was dissolved in AD 289. Married Theodora around AD 293. Constantius Chlorus; Augustus (West). A soldier from humble beginnings who rose through the ranks to the army's highest commands, he was taken into Diocletian’s Tetrarchy as one of its four original rulers. As Caesar in Gaul he put down the usurper Carausius and then Allectus, the murderer who succeeded him, in Britain, and fought campaign after campaign on the Rhine against the Alamanni and Franks. When the great persecution was proclaimed he demolished churches but would not hound the Christians living under his rule. As senior emperor he marched against the Picts beyond the Antonine Wall; his sudden death at York ended the campaign, and the army at once acclaimed his son Constantine – an act that helped unravel the Tetrarchy. The nickname “Chlorus,” the Pale, was a later Byzantine coinage.
