Heraclius (AD 612 – 641). Emperor (r. 641). Married Gregoria around AD 629. Constantine III; son of Heraclius and Fabia Eudokia. Crowned augustus before his first birthday, he spent his youth as the resident emperor in Constantinople while his father campaigned against Persia, and at fourteen helped defend the city during the siege of 626. As his stepmother Martina and her sons rose in precedence, his own role dwindled to the ceremonial. On becoming senior emperor he moved quickly to protect his line, writing to the army and sending more than two million gold solidi for distribution among the soldiers to secure the succession for his children. Tuberculosis killed him after only three months; the rumour that Martina had poisoned him helped raise his son Constans II to the throne and, in time, saw Martina and her sons deposed, mutilated and driven into exile.
