Portrait of Isaac Komnenos

Isaac (AD 1093 – 1152). Sebastokrator; son of Alexios I; father of Andronikos I. Born in the purple, he sided with his brother John II against their mother and sister in the succession crisis of 1118 and was rewarded with the rank of sebastokrator. The brothers drifted apart as Isaac came to covet the throne; caught up in a plot in 1130, he fled with his sons and spent six years roaming Asia Minor and the Levant, seeking Christian and Muslim allies against John. As his hopes faded he made peace with his brother in 1138, only to be banished to Heraclea Pontica after his eldest son went over to the Seljuks. In 1143 he backed his nephew Isaac against Manuel I. Forced out of public life around 1150, he founded the Kosmosoteira monastery at Bera in Thrace as his burial place. A learned patron and writer, he rebuilt the Chora Church in Constantinople, where a mosaic portrait of him survives.
