Justin (AD 450 – 527). Emperor (r. 518–527). Married Euphemia. Rose from peasant origins; married Euphemia (no biological children); adopted his nephew Justinian I as heir. He came to Constantinople as a young man with two companions and little more than a sack of bread between them, enlisted in the palace guard, the excubitors, and was noted for bravery against Isaurians and Persians, rising to command the guard itself. When Anastasius died, the chamberlain Amantius handed him money to buy the throne for another; Justin used it to win the election for himself, and had Amantius and his candidate executed within days. A firm Chalcedonian, he healed the Acacian schism and brought Constantinople back into communion with Rome, made the faith an arm of his statecraft abroad, courted client kingdoms as buffers along the frontiers, and stayed out of major war until the closing years of his reign.
