Justina
340 – 388 · Generation IV · Empress
Justina (AD 340 – 388). Empress. Married Valentinian. Second wife of Valentinian I; mother of Valentinian II and Galla. Her father Justus, governor of Picenum, was reportedly killed on the orders of Constantius II after dreaming that he brought forth the imperial purple, and some historians link her by descent to the Constantinian dynasty. Her first husband was the usurper Magnentius, though she was then too young to bear children. Around 370 she married Valentinian I and bore him a son and three daughters. When he died in 375 her brother Cerealis had the young Valentinian II proclaimed emperor by the troops, and she helped him rule from Milan. An Arian, she championed her faith in a long struggle with Bishop Ambrose that began in 385 over the use of a basilica. When Magnus Maximus invaded Italy in 387 she fled to Thessalonica and, by marrying Galla to Theodosius I, won his intervention. Maximus fell in 388, but Justina died that same year.
