Lazar Branković

Lazar (AD 1421 – 1458). despot (r. 1456–1458). Married Helena around AD 1446. Despot of Serbia; husband of Helena Palaiologina. He became his father Đurađ Branković’s heir almost by default: his two elder brothers had been blinded on the orders of Sultan Murad II, leaving Lazar the only son unmaimed. Much of his brief rule went to quarrels with his mother and siblings. In 1457 he took an oath of submission to Murad’s son and successor Mehmed II — read by historians as a bid to stave off an Ottoman invasion — and he raised Mihailo Anđelović, of the Angelos family, to be his leading minister, a man who after Lazar’s death briefly stood at the head of a regency council. He left three daughters but no son, and the despotate passed to his elder brother Stefan.
