Marcus (b. AD null). co-emperor (r. 475–476). Son of Basiliscus and Aelia Zenonis. When his father seized the throne, Marcus was promptly crowned caesar and later raised to augustus, reigning as the junior partner through the regime’s brief and troubled life. As support drained away – heavy taxes, unpopular religious policy, generals changing sides – Zeno re-entered Constantinople unopposed, and the family hid in a church, emerging only on Zeno’s oath that no blood of theirs would be shed. The letter of it he kept: father, mother and son were exiled to Limnae in Cappadocia and shut up in a waterless cistern to die of hunger — though some sources say they were beheaded instead.
