Maxentius (AD 283 – 312). usurper (r. 306–312). Married Valeria. (West); son of Maximian; defeated at the Milvian Bridge. He held Italy and North Africa with the Roman Senate’s recognition, yet his fellow emperors never accepted him as legitimate. Son of the emperor Maximian and son-in-law of Galerius, he passed his final years in the empire’s civil wars, standing with Maximinus against the pact of Constantine and Licinius. He was the last emperor to make Rome his permanent home, and he worked to restore and adorn the old capital – raising the Temple of the Divine Romulus for his dead son, beginning the vast basilica that bears his name (finished by Constantine), and building his own villa and circus. When his army broke at the Milvian Bridge, he is said to have drowned in the Tiber.
