Paul

510 – ? · Generation X

Paul (b. AD 510). Father of Emperor Maurice. The family came from Arabissus in Cappadocia, and Evagrius claimed that its lineage reached back to “elder Rome.” Early in his son’s reign, Paul — by then an old man — was summoned to Constantinople with his wife, his son Peter and his two daughters. Maurice made him head of the Senate and chief of the patricians, and gave him and Peter the vast estate of the patrician Marcellus, brother of Justin II, along with a house near Hagia Sophia. Such generosity to the emperor’s kin, set against Maurice’s cuts to army pay and state spending, probably helped turn public opinion against the regime. Paul seems to have married twice — Maurice is recorded celebrating his father’s wedding at a later date — and he died in 593.
