Staurakios

Staurakios (AD 790 – 812). Emperor (r. 811). Married Theophano around AD 807. Son of Nikephoros I; abdicated after wounds. His reign was the shortest of any Byzantine emperor — sixty-eight days. Riding with the invasion of Bulgaria in 811, he saw the army besiege Pliska and beat a relief force before Khan Krum trapped it in a valley and destroyed it; his father was slain, and Staurakios was carried from the field with a severed spine. Borne back to Constantinople by litter, he was proclaimed emperor to preserve the succession even as his wounds made the question of who would follow him a matter of open dispute. Within weeks his brother-in-law Michael I Rangabe supplanted him, and he was sent to a monastery, where he died of gangrene — or, some said, of poison administered by his sister Prokopia.
