Staurakios

800 – 813 · Generation XX · Co-emperor (r. 811–813)

Staurakios was the third child of the emperor Michael I Rangabe and Prokopia, a daughter of the emperor Nikephoros I, and was named after his mother’s brother, the emperor Staurakios. He was a junior co-emperor during his father’s short reign.

His father came to the throne through disaster. Nikephoros I was killed fighting the Bulgars at Pliska in July 811, and his son Staurakios was crippled in the same battle. On 2 October the Senate and the guard regiments acclaimed Nikephoros’s son-in-law Michael as emperor and made the wounded Staurakios abdicate. Michael crowned his wife Augusta on 12 October and crowned the boy co-emperor in Hagia Sophia on Christmas Day 811. According to the life of his brother, the patriarch Ignatios, he was crowned together with his brother Theophylact.

Nothing more is known of him except that he died, in circumstances that are not recorded, before July 813, when his father abdicated in the face of a revolt led by Leo the Armenian.
