Anna of Tyrol

Anna (1585 – 1618). Consort. Married Matthias in 1611. First cousin and wife of Matthias; daughter of Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria. Born at Innsbruck, the youngest daughter of the archduke and his second wife, Anna Caterina Gonzaga, she was raised in a strictly Catholic household. Sigismund III of Poland sought her hand but was refused the emperor’s consent, and Rudolf II courted her himself before withdrawing; his brother Matthias, already King of Hungary and Bohemia and in his fifties, married her at Vienna’s Augustinian Church. Crowned empress at Frankfurt in June 1612 — the first imperial consort crowned since Eleanor of Portugal — and later queen at Pressburg and Prague, she persuaded Matthias to move the court from Prague to Vienna. A zealous champion of the Counter-Reformation, she patronised the Capuchins and received the Golden Rose from Pope Paul V. She died in December 1618, a month after work began on the couple’s tomb — the future Imperial Crypt, where their coffins rest side by side.
