Christian (1481 – 1559). King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (r. 1513–1523). Married Isabella in 1515. Married Isabella of Austria; deposed in 1523 and died in captivity. He fought for years to hold the Kalmar Union together, and after conquering Sweden in 1520 had some eighty of its leading nobles and churchmen executed in the Stockholm Bloodbath — a massacre that provoked Gustav Vasa's rising, cost him the Swedish crown, and left him remembered there as “Christian the Tyrant.” At home he pushed through radical laws favouring tradesmen and peasants at the expense of the nobility and clergy, who rose against him and drove him into exile in the Netherlands. An attempt to win back his thrones in 1531 ended in arrest, and he spent his remaining decades a prisoner at Sønderborg and later Kalundborg castle.
