Louis (1506 – 1526). King of Hungary and Bohemia (r. 1516–1526). Married Mary in 1515. Brother of Anna; married Mary; died fleeing Mohács, opening his crowns to Ferdinand I. Born prematurely, he was kept alive — the story goes — wrapped in the warm carcasses of slain animals, and was crowned in both his kingdoms while still a small child. As king he was largely a puppet of quarrelling magnates, kept so short of money that he sometimes pawned his jewels for food and clothing while the border defences crumbled. His refusal to pay tribute to the new sultan, Suleiman, brought war; Belgrade fell in 1521, laying Hungary open. Leading a medieval army with obsolete tactics against Ottoman cannon and janissaries at Mohács, he saw it destroyed in barely two hours, and drowned in a stream during the retreat, dragged down by the weight of his armour.
