Portrait of Regina von Habsburg

Regina (1925 – 2010). Consort. Married Otto in 1951. Wife of Otto von Habsburg; mother of Karl von Habsburg. Born Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen in Würzburg, she was raised a Catholic, her mother’s faith, though her dynasty was Protestant, and grew up at the Veste Heldburg in southern Thuringia. Her father died in 1946 as a prisoner in the Soviet camp at Cherepovets; her mother fled with her to West Germany. After training in social work at Bamberg she was working at a Caritas home for Hungarian refugees in Munich when Otto, a fourth cousin, visited it in 1949. Barred from Austria, Otto married her in Nancy, and from 1954 they lived at Pöcking; he credited her support for his success in the European Parliament. They had seven children. After a stroke in 2005 she recovered enough to take part in moving her mother’s and brother’s remains to Heldburg. She died in 2010; at Otto’s funeral in 2011 her remains, save her heart, went to Vienna’s Kaisergruft.
