Gallienus (AD 218 – AD 268). Roman emperor (r. AD 253–268). Married Cornelia around AD 240. Held the shrinking core of the empire through its worst decade while father, sons and provinces were lost around him. Raised to Augustus by the Senate when his father took the throne, he was assigned the West while Valerian marched east, and he fought without pause — beating the usurper Ingenuus in 258 and wiping out an invading Alemanni host near Mediolanum the following year. His father’s capture at Edessa dropped the whole empire into his hands and into civil war at once. He put down the eastern pretenders Macrianus and Aemilianus but could not stop the general Postumus from carving out a breakaway Gallic Empire. For all the losses, no emperor of the previous half-century had held the throne as long as his fifteen years. The end came at Mediolanum again: while he besieged the usurper Aureolus inside the city, a conspiracy reached him first, and the officer Cecropius stabbed him to death.
