Julia Soaemias
180 – 222 · Generation XII · Severan
Julia (AD 180 – AD 222). Died beside her son Elagabalus when the Guard turned on them both. The elder daughter of Julia Maesa, she married Sextus Varius Marcellus of Apamea, who rose to the Senate and died around 215 while governing Numidia. When Macrinus sent the family back to Emesa in 217, her son became chief priest of the god Elagabal, and the next year her mother’s wealth — together with the claim that the boy was Caracalla’s bastard — won the local legion to his cause. As Augusta and “mother of the camp and the senate,” she encouraged her son’s promotion of his Syrian god, took the senatorial rank of clarissima, appeared beside him in the Senate and presided over a “women’s senate” on fashion and protocol. When the Praetorians rioted in 222 she entered their camp to protect him. Their bodies were dragged through the streets into the Tiber, and her name was struck from the records.
