Septimius (AD 145 – AD 211). Roman emperor (r. AD 193–211). Married Julia around AD 187. The African emperor from Leptis Magna who won the civil wars of 193; died at York telling his sons to enrich the soldiers and scorn the rest. Born at Leptis Magna of Roman and Punic stock, he climbed the usual ladder of offices under Marcus Aurelius and Commodus before seizing his moment in the Year of the Five Emperors: he deposed and killed Didius Julianus, broke Pescennius Niger at Issus, and finished Clodius Albinus at Lugdunum. His wars pushed the frontiers outward on three sides — Osroene annexed and the Parthian capital Ctesiphon sacked in 197, the eastern border carried to the Tigris and the Arabian limes fortified, while in Africa a campaign against the Garamantes took their capital Garama and extended the desert frontier of Tripolitania. In Britain he strengthened Hadrian's Wall, reoccupied the Antonine Wall, and led fifty thousand men into Caledonia — an ambition cut short by the infectious disease that killed him. His dynasty was Rome's last before the Crisis of the Third Century.
