Portrait of Anne Neville

Anne Neville (1456–1485). Married Richard III of Gloucester in 1472. The younger daughter and co-heiress of Warwick “the Kingmaker,” she spent much of her childhood at Middleham, where the young Richard of Gloucester trained for knighthood. When her father changed sides in 1470, she was married at Angers to the Lancastrian heir, Edward of Westminster, to bind the new alliance; within months Warwick fell at Barnet and her husband at Tewkesbury, and she was taken prisoner. Her brother-in-law Clarence, eager for the whole Warwick inheritance, tried to keep her unwed, but Richard won her by surrendering much of the estate. She made her home with him at Middleham, bore their son Edward, and in July 1483 shared the first joint coronation in England for 175 years. The boy’s sudden death in 1484 left her heartbroken, and she died the following March, probably of tuberculosis, amid rumours of poison that Richard publicly denied.
