Edmund Tudor (1430–1456). Earl of Richmond. Married Margaret Beaufort in 1455. Born at Much Hadham to Owen Tudor and Catherine of Valois, widow of Henry V, he was half-brother to Henry VI, who oversaw his education after his mother’s death and his father’s imprisonment. Created Earl of Richmond in 1449, he and his brother Jasper ranked above every other earl and sat among the king’s few personal advisers, chiefly upholding royal authority in Wales; Edmund also ran his estates profitably and invested in the Boston wool trade. Granted the wardship of the young heiress Margaret Beaufort in 1453, he married her in 1455. Sent to put down Gruffudd ap Nicolas’s rising in South Wales, he was seized at Carmarthen by Yorkist troops under William Herbert and died there of plague in November 1456, leaving a thirteen-year-old widow who gave birth to their son Henry three months later.
