Frederick V of Denmark (1723–1766). King of Denmark and Norway. Married Louise of Great Britain in 1743. A son of the devoutly Pietist Christian VI, he grew instead into a pleasure-seeker, and under him the austerity of the previous reign eased: amusements and open expression his father had banned were allowed again. Drink left him little able to govern in person, and the work of ruling fell chiefly to capable ministers steeped in Enlightenment thinking, under whom trade and early industry advanced, the arts and sciences flourished, and Denmark–Norway stayed clear of the wars then burning across Europe.
