Portrait of Louise of Great Britain

Louise of Great Britain (1724–1751). Queen consort of Denmark and Norway. Married Frederick V of Denmark in 1743. The youngest child of George II and Caroline of Ansbach, she lost her mother at twelve and was brought up largely by her elder sister Caroline. Her marriage to Crown Prince Frederick was a political bargain, struck because British ministers wanted Danish support; she was married by proxy in Hanover and first met her husband at Altona a week later. They got on well enough, though he never gave up his mistresses. In Copenhagen she won real affection by learning Danish and speaking it with her children at a largely German-speaking court, and as queen from 1746 she helped make the palace festive again, inviting Pietro Mingotti’s Italian opera company, whose members included Gluck, and a French theatre troupe. Pregnant with her sixth child, she was struck by a trapped umbilical hernia and died despite surgery, the day after her twenty-seventh birthday. She was buried in Roskilde Cathedral.
