King James V of Scotland

James V Stewart (1512–1542). King of Scots. Married Mary of Guise in 1538. Crowned at seventeen months and long kept in the custody of his stepfather the Earl of Angus, he opened his personal rule in 1528 by driving Angus into exile and seizing Douglas lands. He filled the treasury by tightening his grip on royal estates, justice and customs, founded the College of Justice in 1532, and moved against lawlessness in the Borders and the Hebrides. Playing France, England and the Empire against one another lent him unusual diplomatic weight, and Pope Paul III named him Defender of the Faith in 1537. A patron of the arts who spent lavishly on Renaissance palaces, he died within weeks of the Scottish defeat at Solway Moss.
