Portrait of Amelia of Great Britain

Amelia of Great Britain (1711–1786). The second daughter of the future George II and Caroline of Ansbach, she was born at Herrenhausen and came to England in 1714 when her grandfather took the British throne. A sickly child, she was inoculated against smallpox in 1722 at her progressive mother’s wish. Years of talks to marry her to her cousin Frederick of Prussia came to nothing, and a French match was blocked because it would have required her to turn Catholic. She never married, living with her father until his death in 1760; she loved riding and hunting, and Lady Pomfret thought her very odd, if honest. As ranger of Richmond Park from 1751 she closed it to the public until a brewer won back the right of way in court in 1758. She died in Cavendish Square, the last of George II’s children, with a miniature of Frederick the Great on her body.
