Elizabeth Stuart (1596–1662). Queen of Bohemia. Married Frederick V of the Palatinate in 1613. They had one child. “The Winter Queen” — one season on the Bohemian throne, and the Hanoverian succession through her daughter. Named in honour of her father’s predecessor Elizabeth I, she figured unknowingly in the Gunpowder Plot as a child: part of the scheme was to set her on the throne in her father’s place and raise her a Catholic. She was married in the Chapel Royal at Whitehall, and the couple’s later election to the Bohemian crown by that kingdom’s nobles fed the turmoil that opened the Thirty Years’ War. Driven from Bohemia, she passed long years of exile at The Hague, returning to England only at the end of her life, when her nephew was restored to the throne. She is buried in Westminster Abbey.
