Frederick V of the Palatinate (1596–1632). Elector Palatine, King of Bohemia. Married Elizabeth Stuart in 1613. A Calvinist intellectual who led the Protestant Union, he accepted the Bohemian crown from that kingdom’s rebellious Protestant nobles in 1619, counting on support that never came — his father-in-law opposed the venture, and his own allies stepped aside by the Treaty of Ulm. Defeat at the Battle of White Mountain ended his reign a year and four days after his coronation, earning him the derisive title “the Winter King.” Imperial armies then overran the Palatinate itself; formally stripped of his lands in 1623, he lived out his exile mostly at The Hague and died at Mainz after failing to persuade Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden to restore him. His son Charles Louis recovered the electorate at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.
