Portrait of King Harthacnut

Harthacnut of Denmark (1018–1042). King of England (r. 1040–1042). Son of Cnut the Great and Emma of Normandy, he was king of Denmark from 1035 but could not hold his father’s whole inheritance: Magnus I seized Norway, and England passed first to his half-brother Harold Harefoot, whose death at last brought Harthacnut the English crown. He died suddenly two years on — the last monarch of the North Sea Empire and of the House of Knýtlinga, and the last Dane to rule England — leaving Denmark to Magnus and England to Edward the Confessor.
