Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1786–1861). Duchess of Kent. Married Edward Duke of Kent in 1818. One of their children is recorded in this archive. A daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and sister of the future Leopold I of Belgium, she first married Emich Karl, Prince of Leiningen, in 1803, and after his death in 1814 governed Leiningen as regent for their son. Princess Charlotte’s death in 1817 sent George III’s sons in search of wives, and the Duke of Kent proposed. Widowed eight months after her daughter’s birth, she stayed in England on slender means, staking everything on the girl’s future. With her comptroller Sir John Conroy she raised the princess in near-isolation under the “Kensington System,” feuded with William IV, and was named prospective regent in 1831. The young queen kept her at arm’s length, but after the birth of the first grandchild — probably through Prince Albert’s influence — mother and daughter were reconciled. Around 1836 she composed The Royal Artillery Slow March. She was buried at Frogmore.
