Victoria (1819–1901). Queen of the United Kingdom (r. 1837–1901), Empress of India. Married Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840. They had 9 children. Reigned longer than any predecessor; her nine children married across Europe and made her “the grandmother of Europe.” Raised under her mother's close watch, she came to the throne at eighteen after her father's elder brothers died leaving no surviving legitimate heirs. The era that bears her name saw sweeping industrial, scientific, and political change and a great widening of the British Empire. Privately she pressed her views on ministers and appointments; publicly she became a national icon bound up with strict personal morality. Albert's death in 1861 sent her into deep mourning and long seclusion, during which republican feeling briefly gained ground, but her popularity returned, and her Golden and Diamond jubilees were national celebrations. She died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, the last monarch of the House of Hanover.
