Arthur Duke of Connaught (1850–1942). Governor General of Canada. The third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, named after his godfather the Duke of Wellington, he trained at Woolwich and spent some forty years as a serving soldier — fighting Fenian raiders in Canada in 1870, serving in Egypt in 1882, commanding the Bombay Army and rising to field marshal in 1902. In 1879 he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, with whom he had three children. Sworn in as Canada’s governor general in 1911, the first member of the royal family to hold the post, he saw the country into the First World War, though Prime Minister Robert Borden felt he overstepped his constitutional role by addressing departing troops unbidden. He opened India’s new legislature in 1921, was re-elected Grand Master of English Freemasons again and again from 1901 until he was nearly ninety, and died at Bagshot Park in 1942, the last of Victoria’s sons.
