Victoria Princess Royal (1840–1901). German Empress. Married Frederick III of Germany in 1858. One of their children is recorded in this archive. Eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, she was briefly heir presumptive until her brother Edward’s birth, and her father schooled her in his liberal politics. She first met Frederick at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and they married at St James’s Palace when she was seventeen. In Berlin her English birth and her hopes for a constitutional Prussia earned her the hostility of the court and of Bismarck. Their first child, the future Wilhelm II, was injured in a difficult breech birth, leaving his left arm shortened. Frederick reigned only ninety-nine days in 1888 before dying of cancer of the larynx, and their son at once had his parents’ rooms searched for papers. Known thereafter as the Empress Frederick, she built Friedrichshof at Kronberg. Some 7,800 letters between her and her parents survive, a rich record of the Prussian court. She died of breast cancer in 1901.
