Portrait of Beatrice of the United Kingdom

Beatrice of the United Kingdom (1857–1944). Married Henry of Battenberg in 1885. Victoria’s youngest child and constant companion; edited the Queen’s journals. Her father’s death in 1861 bound her ever closer to her mother, and by the 1870s she served as the queen’s secretary, taking dictation of her journal during illness. Rumoured matches — the French Prince Imperial, her widowed brother-in-law Louis of Hesse — came to nothing, and when she fell for Prince Henry of Battenberg in Darmstadt, Victoria would not speak to her for seven months. They married at Whippingham in 1885 on condition that they live with the queen, and had four children, among them Ena, later Queen of Spain. Henry died of malaria on the Ashanti expedition in 1896, and Beatrice succeeded him as Governor of the Isle of Wight. After 1901 she spent thirty years cutting her mother’s journals to a third of their length, destroying the originals as she went. Her son Maurice was killed at Ypres in 1914; she died at Brantridge Park in 1944.
