Andronikos IV Palaiologos

Andronikos (AD 1348 – 1385). Emperor (r. 1376–1379). Married Keratsa. Eldest son of John V; rebelled against his father. Left as regent while John V travelled to Italy, he refused to honour his father’s promises to Venice — stranding the emperor there as a debtor. His first revolt, plotted jointly with an Ottoman prince rebelling against Murad I, failed, and he was imprisoned and blinded in one eye. Freed with Genoese help in 1376, he bought the sultan’s soldiers with the surrender of Gallipoli — a bridgehead that greatly eased the Ottoman advance into Europe — took Constantinople, and held his father and brother prisoner. Overthrown in 1379 with Venetian assistance, he was nevertheless restored as co-emperor and heir in 1381 and given Selymbria as his domain. He rose once more in 1385 and died soon after at Selymbria; he was buried in the Pantokrator monastery.

One of 20 people of Palaiologos (1190–1503) in this archive. The last and longest-lived house — it retook the city in 1261 and lost it in 1453.
