Constantine (AD 316 – 340). Emperor (r. 337–340). (West); eldest surviving son of Constantine I; killed invading Constans's territory. Proclaimed Caesar shortly after his birth, he collected victory titles for successes against the Sarmatians, Alamanni, and Goths, and held the consulship four times. His father had planned for the sons to share power with their cousins Dalmatius and Hannibalianus, but the brothers refused the arrangement, and in the purge that followed – ordered by Constantius II – those cousins were killed. Constantine took the westernmost share of the empire, ruling Gaul, Hispania, and Britain. Convinced that seniority gave him rights over his youngest brother Constans, he pressed the claim by force, invading Italy in 340; the invasion failed, he was killed, and his memory was formally condemned while Constans absorbed his territories.
