John Komnenos
1159 – 1185 · Generation XXXI · co-emperor (r. 1183–1185)
John (AD 1159 – 1185). co-emperor (r. 1183–1185). Son of Andronikos I; murdered by his troops. The second of Andronikos's sons, he was preferred over his elder brother Manuel when their father chose a co-emperor — an inversion of the usual order. His fortunes were bound entirely to his father's: when Andronikos was deposed in September 1185, John was seized as well, and did not survive the month.
Line of descent: Manuel Komnenos → John Komnenos → Alexios I Komnenos → Isaac Komnenos → Andronikos I Komnenos → John Komnenos.
