Theodosius (AD 583 – 602). co-emperor (r. 590–602). Eldest son of Maurice and Constantina; co-emperor from 590; executed 602. The first son born to a reigning emperor in nearly two centuries, he was named for Theodosius II and baptised with the future Pope Gregory the Great as godfather. Raised to caesar as a small boy, he later married a daughter of the patrician Germanus; when the Danube armies mutinied they offered the crown to him or to his father-in-law, and Maurice's suspicion of Germanus poisoned his own house. Dispatched to seek aid from Khosrow II of Persia as the dynasty collapsed, he was recalled, seized by Phocas's men, and killed at Chalcedon days after his father. Rumours of his survival ran so strong that a man claiming to be Theodosius was welcomed by the Persians — impostor or not, historians still debate — as a pretext for war on Byzantium.
