Tiberius (AD 705 – 711). co-emperor (r. 706–711). Son of Justinian II and Theodora of Khazaria; killed 711. Born at Phanagoria among the Khazars while his father fought to regain the throne, he was brought to Constantinople as an infant and crowned augustus. In 710 he stood with the Senate to welcome Pope Constantine to the city. When Bardanes's rebellion took the capital, his grandmother Anastasia carried the boy to sanctuary in St. Mary's church at Blachernae; the usurper's men tore him from the altar and murdered him outside. His name outlived him strangely — impostors twice claimed to be Tiberius, and one, Bashir, was received with honour by the Umayyad caliph until the lie unravelled and he was crucified at Edessa. The young co-emperor also appears beside his father on the coinage of the second reign.
