Mary I of England

Mary (1516 – 1558). Queen of England (r. 1553–1558). Married Philip in 1554. Second wife of Philip II; his first cousin once removed; no issue. Declared illegitimate after her parents' marriage was annulled, she was restored to the succession and, when her half-brother Edward VI died, moved fast — raising a force in East Anglia and sweeping aside the proclaimed queen, Lady Jane Grey — to become England's first undisputed queen regnant. She set about reversing her father's Reformation and returning England to Rome, though Parliament largely blocked her attempt to restore confiscated church property. More than 280 people were burned for heresy in her five years on the throne — the Marian persecutions that fixed her later reputation as “Bloody Mary.” Her Catholic restoration did not outlast her: her half-sister and successor Elizabeth undid it.
