Philip II of Spain
1527 – 1598 · Generation X · King of Spain (r. 1556–1598) · Spanish Habsburgs
Philip (1527 – 1598). King of Spain (r. 1556–1598). Married Maria Manuela in 1543. Married Mary in 1554. Married Elisabeth in 1559. Married Anna in 1570 — a match across the generations. Son of Charles V; inherited Spain, the Netherlands and the Italian and American dominions in the 1556 split. Governing the Spanish kingdoms as regent from the age of sixteen, he went on to preside over Spain at the height of its power, ruling territory on every continent then known to Europeans; the Philippines were named in his honour. He took the Portuguese crown in 1580 after a dynastic crisis, joining the whole peninsula under one king, and completed the palace of El Escorial. Seeing himself as Catholic Europe's shield, he fought the Ottomans — with victories at Malta and Lepanto — funded the Catholic League in France, and in 1588 sent an armada against Protestant England that skirmish and storms wrecked. The wars outran even American silver: his regime defaulted five times, and his enigmatic character is argued over to this day.
