Portrait of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor

Charles (1500 – 1558). Holy Roman Emperor (r. 1519–1556). Married Isabella in 1526. Ruled an empire 'on which the sun never set'; abdicated 1555–56, splitting the domains between his son Philip II and brother Ferdinand I. He never settled in one capital: some forty journeys carried him through his scattered dominions, and travel consumed roughly a quarter of his reign. At the Diet of Worms in 1521 he declared Martin Luther an outlaw, and much of his life went to war: against Francis I of France, captured at Pavia in 1525; against the Ottomans, from the defence of Vienna to the taking of Tunis; and against the Lutheran Schmalkaldic League, defeated after the Council of Trent was convened. In 1527 his soldiers, in mutiny, sacked Rome. Financing it all on Netherlands wealth, American silver and bankers’ loans left debts and inflation behind him. After yielding to the religious settlement of Augsburg, he abdicated and withdrew to the monastery of Yuste in Extremadura.
