Joanna (1479 – 1555). Queen of Castile (r. 1504–1555). Married Philip in 1496. 'Joanna the Mad'; suo jure Queen of Castile and Aragon; through her the Spanish crowns passed to Charles V. Never expected to inherit, she became heiress to Castile and Aragon only after the deaths of her brother John, her sister Isabella, and her infant nephew Miguel. Once queen, she scarcely governed: her father persuaded the Cortes that her illness made rule impossible, kept the administration for himself, and had her confined in the royal palace at Tordesillas. When her husband courted the Castilian nobility against Ferdinand, she refused to move against her father. On Ferdinand's death she inherited Aragon as well, and remained nominal co-monarch beside her son Charles while still shut away. Historians still debate whether her famous madness was genuine or a story told to set her aside.
