Philip (1478 – 1506). King of Castile (r. 1506). Married Joanna in 1496. 'Philip the Handsome'; his marriage to Joanna fused the Habsburg and Spanish inheritances; died suddenly aged 28. Left heir to the Burgundian lands as a small boy when his mother died in a riding accident, he grew up amid revolts in Flanders and took over the government himself at fifteen. In the Low Countries he proved an effective and well-loved ruler, favouring peace and economic development, and his pursuit of good terms with France frustrated his warlike father Maximilian. His time in Spain went to consolidating his position, in repeated conflict with his wife and her father, Ferdinand of Aragon. Dying before Maximilian, he never inherited Austria or the imperial title — yet by joining the Burgundian inheritance to the Spanish crowns he set his descendants over vast European territories for five centuries.
