Albert (1255 – 1308). King of the Romans (r. 1298–1308). Married Elisabeth in 1274. Duke of Austria and Styria 1282–1308; murdered by his nephew John Parricida. A battle wound cost him an eye — the disfigurement behind his byname “Albert the One-eyed.” He learned government early, administering the family’s Swabian lands in Alsace as landgrave from 1273, and by the Treaty of Rheinfelden in 1283 the grant of Austria and Styria he had shared with his brother Rudolf II passed into his hands alone. With ministeriales brought from his Swabian homelands he governed both duchies to notable effect, gradually breaking the opposition of the local nobility.
